International law is being systematically violated along the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. Under the excessive use of force, Croatian border guards force people, who are seeking protection back to Bosnia and Herzegovina. They are denied the right to seek protection in the EU. Notwithstanding, in October 2019 the EU Commission gave its »green light« for Croatia's accession to the Schengen area, as according to them, the country met the necessary conditions, also in areas of border management and human rights.
How are human rights violations negotiated in Croatia? What is the connection between violence at the border and (migration) policy in Europe?
Marijana Hameršak, Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research Zagreb and Tea Vidović, Centre for Peace Studies will discuss these questions and give an overview on the situation at the croatian border.
The presentation will be in English, translation in German will be provided.

An der Grenze zwischen Bosnien-Herzegowina und Kroatien kommt es zu systematischen Ver letzungen internationalen Rechts. Unter exzessiver Gewaltanwendung zwingen kroatische Grenzbeamt*innen Schutzsuchende nach Bosnien-Herzegowina zurück. So wird ihnen Schutz in der EU verwehrt .
Nichtsdestotrotz gab die EU-Kommission im Oktober 2019 »grünes Licht« für den Beitritt Kroatiens zum Schengenraum. Kroatien erfülle die notwendigen Bedingungen, auch in den Bereichen Grenzmanagement und Menschenreche.
Wie werden die Menschenrechtsverletzungen in Kroatien verhandelt? In welchem Zusammenhang steht die Gewalt an der Grenze zu europäischer (Migrations- )Politik? Diesen Fragen werden Marijana Hameršak, Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research Zagreb und Tea Vidović, Centre for Peace Studies nachgehen und die Gesamtsituation an der Grenze beleuchten.
